MESSAGE FROM PAP PRESIDENT
November 12, 2013
November 12, 2013
To all PAP Members,
First of all, we would like to thank everyone who attended and helped out in our recently concluded and successful PAP-ARUPS conference in Miriam College. We also wish to welcome to the board: Angela Regala, Paz Manaligod, Violeta Bautista, Chit Salonga, Gail Ilagan, Jerome Ouano, and Mark Reyes. Our appreciation goes to our outgoing board members: Jay Yacat, Mira Ofreneo, Je Jurisprudencia, and Seann Tan Mansukhani.
Unfortunately, prior to and after our convention, the country was hit by successive disasters. The news that has emerged from the aftermath of these has been gut wrenching. Yet, it is also times like these that our discipline becomes salient. Unfortunately, many of our Psychology colleagues are themselves survivors and need our help. At this point, the most important response is to provide the basic needs and safety of individuals. If you know of Psychology colleagues who need help, we ask that you contact us to let us know what assistance we may provide email@example.com, 453-8257 or 0915-2848723).
The PAP is coordinating with government and non-government groups in the affected areas who can provide an assessment of psychosocial needs. We shall soon be launching fundraising to generate funds for psychosocial support interventions and training. We have begun to translate psychosocial support material to local dialects to make them more useful. We are also in the process of releasing articles in the media to educate the public on how to cope with disasters.
Once basic and safety needs are met, psychosocial support becomes important. We ask our colleagues in affected areas to first collaborate with DOH (which is the lead government agency for mental health interventions) and/or local agencies/groups before going to areas. In the past, well-meaning counselors have gone in to areas unprepared and did ambush debriefing that caused more harm than help. In order this from happening again and to synchronize efforts, the PAP has created a Disaster Response Team and we will be announcing point persons and protocols for the accepting requests, assessment and deployment of people and resources in the coming weeks.
We ask you continue praying for our fellowmen and hope you will respond to the call to service where and when we are needed.
CALL FOR 2014 PAPJA WORKSHOP FACILITATORS
We are inviting psychologists to run a workshop for the 27th Annual Convention of the Psychological Association of the Philippines-Junior Affiliates (PAPJA) on January 18, 2014.
The PAPJA Convention is an annual gathering of Psychology undergraduate students in the Philippines. The convention serves as an important venue for the sharing of recent developments in the field of psychology as a science, exposure to the practice of psychology through workshops, exchange of ideas, and fellowship. The workshops
are an integral part of the PAPJA Convention and seek to offer students from different parts of the country an opportunity to learn new skills and new knowledge they may otherwise not learn in the classroom. This year, the PAPJA will offer 100 simultaneous workshops for 5,000 Psychology students from all over the Philippines.
A workshop is intended to develop specific skills or competencies in a particular area of practice in psychology. Though it should share new knowledge or expertise in an area of psychology, it is not meant to be a lecture or a sharing of research. All workshops will be held from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon of Saturday, 18 January 2014. Facilitators should expect about 40 to 50 participants per workshop (depending on size of the available rooms). The workshops will be held in selected universities and colleges in Metro Manila. PAP will endeavor to assign facilitators to venues nearest to them (if they are based in Manila). However, final venue assignments will be contingent on availability of rooms in host colleges/universities.
Psychologists interested in running a workshop need to fill out the Workshop Abstract Form. The deadline for submission of the workshop form is 15 November 2013. Please email proposals to firstname.lastname@example.org. All workshop abstracts will be evaluated and screened by the PAPJA Workshop Committee. Selected workshops and their venue assignments will be announced by 30 November 2013.
All workshop facilitators will be given an honorarium of P4000 for their generous sharing of their time and expertise.
